Meet the Farmers

Neal and Krista Roettger have deep roots in the produce business. Collectively they've worked over 10 years with Great River Gardens in Aitkin, MN before launching their own enterprise River Road Farm in 2006.

Krista and Neal work hard to provide exceptional product in naturally accelerated timelines. In early spring, they start seeding in the green house and transplant over 10,000 seedlings to get a jump start on northern Minnesota's short growing season. To encourage successful growth of warm weather produce, the Roettger's utilize high tunnels for a majority of their tomatoes and peppers.

Being more connected is a top priority for the Roettger's. Staying linked to the land through farming, joining friends and neighbors at farmer markets and uniting their community with local produce is their passion in life.

The Farm

The River Road Farm sits on eighty beautiful acres in Northern Aitkin County. It has been a working farm all of its life but has taken on many different faces as a potato, cattle, sheep and horse farm. Now it has transformed into a lush bountiful vegetable farm.

The soil, apart from the old pasture, is sandy loam which provides many advantages when growing produce. It keeps the tender plants well drained yet it still hold moisture. The old pasture is a gem in itself; the dark black soil is rich in nutrients. Adjacent to the gardens lays a ten acre alfalfa field which produces over 1,000 square bales a year.

The garden, throughout the years, has grown. After adding on a little each year, it is currently a little more than seven acres. This year we are adding another two acres to help with crop rotation.
